What is a crown?
Your dentist may recommend a crown or a "cap" to you for reasons such as:

  • Replacing a large filling when there is not enough tooth structure to support a new filling
  • To protect a weak tooth from fracturing
  • Restore a fractured tooth
  • Attach a bridge
  • Cover a dental implant
  • Cover discolored or poorly shaped tooth
  • Teeth that have had a root canal

Crowns may not only improve your chewing function, they can also give your smile a new, youthful appearance.

What is a bridge?
A bridge is recommended if you are missing one or more teeth. Gaps left by missing teeth eventually cause the remaining teeth to rotate or shift, resulting in a bad bite. This imbalance caused by the missing teeth can also lead to gum disease or TMJ (temporalmadibular) joint disorders. Replacing missing teeth with a dental bridge can make eating easier. Bridges are cemented to natural teeth or implants surrounding the empty space. Dental bridges can last 5 to 15 years or even longer with good oral hygiene and regular check-ups.
